International scientists say taking the type 2 diabetes drug metformin may help prevent oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The team looked at the health records of 13,050 people with OSCC and matched them with 130,500 similar people who did not have this cancer. They found being on metformin was linked with a 36% reduction in the likelihood of developing OSCC, with the protective effect most marked in those on higher doses. Metformin should be investigated as a preventative option in people with a high risk of OSCC, and as a potential treatment for this cancer, the authors conclude.
