Two doses of COVID-19 vaccines are far more effective than one against Delta variant

A single dose of both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines are less effective against the Delta strain than the Alpha variant that previously dominated UK infections, according to international research. The authors say the data supports efforts to maximise vaccine uptake with two doses among vulnerable populations. Effectiveness after one dose of either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines was around 30 per cent among persons with the delta variant, compared to 48 per cent among those with the alpha variant, the results were similar for both vaccines. After two doses there were only modest differences in vaccine effectiveness against the delta variant as compared with the alpha variant.
