Two cases of COVID-19 variants in people already vaccinated with mRNA vaccines

Two cases of women becoming infected with variants of COVID-19 despite already being fully vaccinated are reported, highlighting the potential risk from variants, according to US research. The study looked at a group of over 400 people fully vaccinated with either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna mRNA vaccines and found that two women still went on to develop COVID-19.  Genetic sequencing of the virus in the two cases revealed variants of likely clinical importance, including the E484K mutation originally identified in South Africa in 1 woman, and three mutations (T95I, del142–144, and D614G) in both.
