Traffic makes farmers more environmentally friendly

Farmers are more likely to take up voluntary good management practices in paddocks visible from busy roads, new surveying shows. This was most likely to be the case for dairy farmers who have received increased public scrutiny, compared to sheep and beef farmers. Roadside farmers were most likely to take action on "pugging" - cows standing in muddy pastures - as it is the most visible management practice from the road. The researchers say increasing the visibility of other good management practices might make farmers more likely to take them up.
