International scientists, including an Australian, say computer-assisted cognitive behaviour therapy (CCBT) plus treatment as usual (TAU) improves outcomes for depression, compared with TAU alone. They tested CCBT in a trial of 130 depression patients, 74 of whom received the computer therapy, while the other 56 received TAU. Prior to and following the therapies, patients were asked to fill out questionnaires to assess their depression. Those who received CCBT showed greater improvements than those in the TAU group, and remission rates in the CCBT group were more than double those in the TAU group, the scientists say.
