Emotive terms like 'killer', 'monster', and 'Jaws' continue to be used in media coverage of sharks in New Zealand, which researchers say "criminalise" shark bites and portray the animals as intentionally malicious to humans. The science communication experts looked at nearly three decades of NZ print newspapers between 1989 and 2018. They found few reports on shark conservation - with the exception being in 2013, where the practice of shark finning received such a spotlight from the media that it overshadowed the shark-related death that year.
