The future of the New Zealand Medical Journal

Established in 1887, the New Zealand Medical Journal is one of the oldest continuously published medical journals in the Southern Hemisphere. The Pasifika Medical Association Group assumed responsibility for the NZMJ in 2022 following the final insolvency of the New Zealand Medical Association. Now, the PMAG is no longer in a position to continue funding the Journal. Two NZ medical schools, along with philanthropic funding, have committed to funding the Journal for an interim 6-month period while a long-term solution is developed.

The Pasifika Medical Association Group (PMAG) assumed responsibility for the New Zealand
Medical Journal (NZMJ) in 2022 following the final insolvency of the New Zealand Medical
Association (NZMA). Under PMAG’s stewardship, the Journal underwent significant development
and modernisation. However, PMAG is no longer in a position to continue funding the Journal. To
ensure continuity, a consortium comprising the medical schools of The University of Auckland
Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and the University of Otago School of Medicine,
supported by philanthropic funding, has committed to funding the Journal for an interim 6-
month period while a sustainable long-term model is developed. It is hoped that Health New
Zealand – Te Whatu Ora and the University of Waikato School of Medicine will also contribute to
this effort. Nevertheless, establishing a financially sustainable strategy for the Journal’s future
remains an urgent priority.
