That lovely 'new car smell' might actually be harming your health, according to international research which showed that the air inside new cars parked outside for 12 consecutive days contains high levels of chemicals linked to cancer, such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The study also estimated the incremental lifetime cancer risk for drivers and passengers exposed to these compounds and found that there is a high health risk for drivers. The researchers found that the surface temperature of the materials in the car had the biggest impact on the amount of these compounds that were released rather than the more widely used air temperature measurements.
