The number of teenagers in Australia hospitalised after deliberately self-harming increased during the pandemic in 2020, according to a study of hospital records. The researchers say while their records show the rate of self-harm admissions per 1 million teens aged 12-17 was 7.2 in March 2020, it increased to a peak of 11.4 by August 2020. This occurred, the researchers say, during a period of overall lower hospital admissions for children and teens for all causes.
