Gluten-free flour and baking mix is available by prescription in Aotearoa, but just 2% of coeliacs surveyed actually use it. Instead, 90% of the more than 500 Coeliac NZ members surveyed would prefer a discount card, so they can buy a much larger range of gluten-free food at their own local grocers. The study authors say that coeliacs need to maintain a strictly gluten-free diet to stay healthy, but gluten-free foods are often more expensive and add a significant wallet hit to the weekly shop of those with coeliac disease.
