Out-of-school activities, such as sports, music or cultural involvement, aren’t accessed equally in NZ, according to in-depth interviews with 12 activity and education experts. All agreed strongly that access is unequal with kids from poorer backgrounds most affected. Participants said solutions to poverty-driven obstacles lie in community-centred projects, citing current examples like a boxing gym and community orchestra. The authors want to see existing and new effective community-led programmes expanded.
