Stringent public health measures may be needed to safely reopen schools

A Canadian study has found that safely reopening schools requires stringent public health measures in the community, mitigation efforts in schools, and efforts to minimise  COVID-19 transmission in the household.  They found only a slight increase in infections among adults and children within the first eight weeks of school reopening, and they say transmission in schools was not the key driver of the virus cases increasing. Instead, it was the increasing contacts among adults, who returned to work and social activities after schools opened, that mostly contributed to a surge in cases, highlighting the need for stringent public health measures to be maintained.
