Bad news for BBQ fans - it's likely that red meat and alcohol increase the risk of bowel cancer, according to US and Malaysian research that brought together data from 45 previous studies looking at diet and bowel cancer. The scientists also found dietary fibre, yoghurt, and foods high in calcium are likely to reduce bowel cancer risk. However, all the studies they looked at are 'observational' studies, which means they can't prove cause and effect, just that people who ate a lot of red meat and/or drank a lot of alcohol were more likely to develop the disease, while those who ate a lot of fibre, yoghurt and calcium were less likely. The authors recommend further research looking at these foods to see if the relationships are confirmed.
