A US study of 223,949 women aged 50 to 64 years found women on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for perimenopausal symptoms who were taking statins - the cholesterol-busting drugs - had a reduced risk of blood clots compared with women on HRT who were not taking statins. Women on HRT who were not taking statins had a 53% higher risk of a blood clot in their veins than women who were not on HRT or statins, while women on HRT and statins had a 25% higher risk. The researchers also found that higher doses of statins reduced the risk of blood clots more than lower doses, lending weight to the idea that the statins actually caused the reduction in risk.
