Increasing the amount you sleep could help you lose weight and prevent obesity, according to international researchers. The team recruited 80 participants who were classified as overweight and slept less than 6.5 hours a night. Half the group were provided a sleep hygiene counselling session, which the researchers say increased their sleep by about 1.2 hours each night on average. Compared to the other participants who continued their usual routine, the researchers say the sleep counselling group began eating fewer calories a day. The researchers say this means increased sleep could assist in losing weight by encouraging less energy intake via food.
