Heart problems - acute myocarditis - were rare in a study of almost 2.4 million Americans who’d had at least one dose of a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. There were almost six cases per million individuals after the second dose - and just one case per 172,414 in fully-vaccinated individuals. Reflecting the findings of earlier research, all affected patients were men younger than 40 with no prior history of heart problems, and all were discharged from hospital after a week of conservative management. The authors say this study is unique in its ethnic diversity, and in reflecting real-world practice.
