Real world data shows the most severe COVID-19 cases are usually unvaccinated

People hospitalised for COVID-19 are more likely to be unvaccinated than vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine, according to a US study. Among almost 2000 COVID patients, unvaccinated people accounted for 84.2 per cent of COVID-19 hospitalisations. Compared with unvaccinated cases, mRNA vaccine breakthrough cases less commonly received ICU-level care and invasive mechanical ventilation. Unvaccinated patients accounted for 93.9 per cent of cases where their COVID-19 infection resulted in death or invasive mechanical ventilation. The authors say the findings suggest that even those who become infected after being vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine have a lower risk of developing severe COVID-19, compared to the unvaccinated.
