Private equity acquisitions of Australian health care have grown over the past fifteen years, reaching $4.5 billion in 2022, according to new data. The researchers identified a total of 75 private equity acquisitions of health care delivery assets in Australia during 2008–2022, with the annual number rising from just three acquisitions in 2008 to eighteen in 2022. Just over half of these acquisitions have purchase price information available, and the value of those purchases was $24.1 billion. An accompanying editorial points out that while the study does not explore the consequences of these purchases, concerns have been raised in the US about the negative impact of private equity buyouts on health care quality, access, and costs.
