A US study of the health records of around 660,000 children, nearly 60,000 of whom tested positive for COVID-19, looked at lingering symptoms and conditions four weeks or more after an initial positive or negative test. The most common symptom, condition, and prescribed medication at the four-week point were loss of taste or smell, myocarditis, and cough and cold meds, respectively, the scientists say. Among the kids with COVID-19, at least one symptom, condition, or medication prescription occurred in 41.9% four weeks after the test, while in those without COVID-19, at least one symptom, condition, or medication prescription occurred in 38.2% at the same time point, a difference of 3.7%. Younger kids with other health conditions who were severely unwell with COVID-19 were at the highest risk of lingering health problems at the four-week point, the researchers say.
