About 20,000 genes have so far been identified in the human genome, much fewer than the 100,000 originally predicted. But new genes are still being found, with a study published in Nature Biotechnology finding several hundred more genes in less well understood parts of the genome. Many of these are likely to produce proteins which could be involved in development. US researchers found that over 50 of these genes enabled cancer cells to survive, providing new scope for therapeutic treatments.
