In autumn-winter 2023-2024 in the US, the risk of death in patients hospitalised for COVID-19 was greater than the risk of death in patients hospitalised for seasonal influenza, according to international research based on the US Department of Veterans Affairs health records. The study looked at data from all 50 states of over 11,000 people admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of either COVID-19 or flu between October 2023 and March 2024. They found that patients hospitalised for COVID-19 had a higher risk of death compared with those hospitalised for influenza. The authors do note that the Veterans Affairs population are generally older and predominantly male, which may not represent the general population and the actual causes of death were not examined.
