New Zealand researchers are reporting promising findings from a small-scale programme aimed at lowering some of the risk factors for prediabetes in Pasifika communities by involving Pasifika youth. Twenty-five young adults co-designed the eight-week health programme, which aimed to increase physical activity, enhance the awareness of eating habits, and build knowledge of health and wellbeing in their communities. The participants - who were either overweight or obese - lost about 2 per cent of their total body weight and became more physically active. The study authors say these promising results lie in the collaborative nature of the study.
