NZ homes should be certified for energy efficiency

New Zealand lags behind other countries as we don’t certify homes for their energy performance. Kiwi researchers applied overseas rating systems to NZ dwellings, finding Australia’s was the most relevant example. They say NZ’s energy certification should reward resource-efficient behaviours and designs - and include the estimated energy, CO2 emissions, and cost to heat the home, and if it meets the World Health Organization benchmark for indoor temperature. Certificates should also reflect adaptability and the extra resources used in larger homes, these authors say.
