Bottlenose dolphins in Doubtful Sound whistle differently than ones near Great Barrier Island. The two populations studied showed clear differences in the style, duration and pitch of their acoustic communications, a pattern that has been noticed in other marine mammal populations globally. In this study, the Doubtful Sound dolphins displayed a more complicated whistle repertoire.
