Most patients say they have low trust that artificial intelligence tools will be used responsibly within the healthcare system and that they will be protected from AI harms, according to a US study. In 2023, the researchers surveyed about 2000 Americans about their general trust in the healthcare system and how they felt about the use of AI tools within the system. On a scale of 0-12, the researchers say the average level of trust in the healthcare system among the participants was just over 5. They say 65% of participants said they had low trust that the healthcare system would use AI responsibly, and 57.7% reported low trust that the system would make sure an AI tool wouldn't harm them. Those with higher general trust in the healthcare system were more likely to trust the use of AI, the researchers add.
