Nearly 1 in 10 Kiwis report “excellent” wellbeing in lockdown

Countering the view that lockdowns are tough for all, a New Zealand survey of 3487 adults has found nine per cent reported excellent wellbeing during 2020’s strict COVID-19 ‘stay home’ policy - compared to 7% of people in a pre-lockdown national survey. Māori and Asian participants were more likely to report excellent wellbeing than NZ European/Others, possibly linked to cultural significance of family connections. People who thrived in lockdown were also more likely to be male, older, less-educated, and non-smoking. The team says their results provide a path for authorities and the public to boost wellbeing, such as measures to lower stress and lift connectedness.
