Possums may be able to shortcut learning by trial and error by watching other possums learn certain tasks instead, which could have implications for pest control efforts in NZ. Researchers gave possums puzzles that had a sweet treat hidden inside, while possums in pens next door watched them figure out how to get to the good stuff over the course of several nights. When the observing possums were given the chance to solve the puzzle themselves, all 15 succeeded on their first night. The researchers say future research should test if social learning also helps possums avoid traps and baits, which could have important implications for NZ’s predator free goals.

The ability to learn through observing other individuals (social learning) can reduce the costs associated with individual trial-and-error learning. This social learning may be contributing to trap and bait avoidance in invasive species like the Common Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) in New Zealand. By using ‘demonstrators’, who had to learn how to solve a puzzle device containing an attractive food reward, and ‘observers’, who were able to watch these demonstrators learning and were then presented with the puzzle themselves, we provide strong evidence of social learning by common brushtail possums – the first of such findings.
