Medical cannabis linked to drop in opioid use

Patients prescribed medical cannabis for a longer duration were more likely to reduce their prescription opioid dosage, according to new research. Long-term use of opioid-based painkillers is an effective treatment for chronic pain, but this has led to an addiction and overdose crisis in the US. The researchers say long-term medicinal cannabis prescriptions could help by providing patients with an alternative, especially for people with high opioid prescriptions.
