A sweeping review of international research has found strong and consistent evidence that masks prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses. The authors call on researchers to stop debating the question of whether masks work and instead focus on how to make masks more comfortable, environmentally friendly, and socially accepted. They say governments and organisations must update policies on mask use to protect at-risk groups, limit seasonal illnesses and control pandemics. An accompanying Public Health Communication Centre Briefing outlines what this might look like in New Zealand.
