Schools in the US that removed the requirement to wear masks saw higher COVID-19 transmission than schools that didn't, according to international researchers. The state of Massachusetts dropped a requirement for schools to wear masks in February 2022 but not all school districts responded by removing masks, providing an opportunity to compare COVID-19 transmission between masked and non-masked schools. The researchers say while transmission trends were similar across school districts before the change, 44.9 more cases per 1000 students were reported among schools that dropped mask requirements in the first 15 weeks compared to those who kept masks.
