What The Study Did: Researchers investigated whether spending a year aboard the International Space Station was associated with worsening of spaceflight-associated structural changes to the eye.
Further research has found that long-term spaceflight may not be so easy on the eyes. The international team, including NASA researchers, studied changes to the eyes of two crew members on the International Space Station (ISS) over the course of a year in space, and found that there was an increase in the thickness of their retinas, as well as swelling of the optic nerve. Due to the small number of people studied, the researchers emphasise the need for more participants with one-year-long missions to confirm their findings.
