Lingering concussion complications linked with depressive symptoms

Publicly released:
International

If you’ve had a concussion and are one of the 15-30% of people experiencing lingering symptoms, you might be more likely to experience symptoms of depression, according to international researchers. The team reviewed 18 studies with over 9,000 participants and found that the odds of depressive symptoms increased fourfold among people who experienced persistent post-concussion symptoms such as ongoing headaches, fatigue, dizziness, cognitive difficulties, and emotional changes. The results show that, following concussion, patients should be given post-injury support and mental health interventions to better support their long-term recovery, the team says.
