Likelihood of wildfires in Southern Europe doubled since the 80s

Despite there being fewer fires in the region, Southern Europe - including the Iberian Peninsula, France, Italy and Greece - has been experiencing more than twice as many summer days with conditions perfect for wildfires to ignite since 1981, say international researchers. The team looked at national wildfire records from across Southern Europe, and compared them to weather and climate data from 1981 to 2025. They say parts of France and Spain had up to 50% more fire-promoting weather - hot, dry, and windy conditions - between 2016 and 2025, compared with 1981 to 2010. Additionally, the days that had highly fire-promoting conditions also rose, from under ten days each summer in 1981-2010 to around 25 days over the past decade, they say. Interestingly, the team also found the annual number of fires over the last decade was around 40% lower than the 1981-2010 period; however, this might be due to improvements in management around wildfires.

Fewer fires but greater wildfire risk in Southern Europe

Summer days featuring conditions that promote wildfire ignition, intensity, and spread have more than doubled across large parts of the Iberian Peninsula, France, Italy, and Greece since 1981, according to a study in Scientific Reports. The findings suggest that hotter, drier weather is increasing wildfire risk across Southern Europe, despite fewer fires occurring in the region since the 1980s.

Raúl Cordero and colleagues analysed national wildfire records from Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, and Greece, alongside weather and climate data, between 1981 and 2025.  They found that in parts of France and Spain, the intensity of fire-promoting weather — hot, dry, and windy conditions — had increased by up to 50% between 2016 and 2025, compared with 1981 to 2010. The number of days with highly fire-promoting conditions also rose, from fewer than ten days per summer in 1981–2010 to around 25 days over the past decade in parts of each country studied. However, the annual number of fires during the past decade was approximately 40% lower than the 1981 to 2010 average in each country studied. The authors suggest that this may reflect improvements in wildfire management such as better training for fire brigades and public awareness campaigns.

The authors note that the frequency of fire-promoting weather reflects increases in warm, dry days and is linked to large-scale climate patterns, including El Niño. Smaller air-pressure differences across the North Atlantic coincided with an increase in fire-promoting weather in parts of Greece, Italy, Corsica, and Spain. Sea-surface-temperature anomalies in the tropical Pacific, associated with El Niño, preceded fire-promoting weather in parts of northwestern Iberia, in Sicily, and southern Greece.

The authors conclude that rising temperatures are intensifying fire-promoting weather across Southern Europe and that, although fewer fires are occurring, those that do occur may be becoming harder to control. They recommend minimising wildfire risk through further improvements in fire management — including controlled burnings — and by adopting a more climate-resilient approach to land use.
