The antifungal-resistant yeast Candida auris is rapidly spreading around the world, especially in healthcare settings, and can cause serious infections. Doctors reviewed what happened when they found NZ’s first case of Candida auris earlier this year to see what lessons could be learnt. The 69-year-old man was admitted from an overseas hospital to manage cancer, but wasn’t screened for multidrug-resistant organisms until his third day in hospital. The authors say this was a missed opportunity, and the case is a reminder to healthcare practitioners to be vigilant to the risk of C. auris coming in from overseas.

Candida auris is a yeast that can cause infections in people. It has spread quickly worldwide and is a problem because it can be resistant to antifungal medication, spread easily in healthcare settings, and cause serious infections. This is a report of the first time this yeast has been detected in Aotearoa New Zealand. We share important learning points for healthcare organisations to consider when preparing their response to this global threat.
