Mindfulness meditation may be just as good as starting the antidepressant Escitalopram when it comes to treating anxiety, according to international research. The study compared eight weeks of mindfulness meditation classes with starting the antidepressant and found that while at the four week mark, the antidepressant had a slight edge, by eight weeks both groups had about the same decrease in symptoms. The researchers say the findings are consistent with previous work demonstrating the efficacy of mindfulness for panic and social anxiety disorders.
