A new editorial argues the growth of rural health research and education in New Zealand has been “sluggish” at best, and is often carried out by academics with no experience living and working in rural areas. The author highlights three government programmes in Australia aimed to ensure that medical education and research are well-resourced and embedded in rural communities, which he argues are close-to-home examples that could be adapted to New Zealand.
