A healthy vegan diet can assist in lowering cholesterol, weight and insulin levels, according to an international study of identical twins. 22 pairs of identical twins were recruited, with one of each pair eating a healthy vegan diet and the other a healthy omnivorous diet for two months. At the end of the two months, the researchers say cholesterol levels and insulin levels were better in the vegan group compared to their siblings, and the vegan group lost more weight. They say their research shows a vegan diet can be an option for reducing the risk of some health problems, with identical twins providing an opportunity to compare health outcomes between two people with especially similar genetic and lifestyle factors.
