More than one in ten elderly people could be suffering some form of abuse, according to an international study that found 11 per cent of its respondents had suffered some form of elder mistreatment. The study interviewed just under 3,000 people over 60 who were living in the community in 2009, then followed up with 628 who were able to continue participating ten years later. At the end of the study one in twelve had suffered financial abuse, one in 24 emotional abuse, one in 43 physical abuse and one in 100 neglect.
