Analysing hospital data for 20,714 US children with COVID-19, US researchers say nearly a third of children hospitalised with COVID-19 developed the severe form of the disease. The scientists say boys were more likely than girls to develop severe disease, and children with pre-existing illnesses were also at higher risk. And younger children (those aged 2-11 years) were more likely than older children (those aged 12-18 years) to develop severe disease. Although most children with COVID-19 experience mild illness only, the researchers say understanding the causes of severe COVID-19 in kids could help avoid serious illness and save lives.
