Higher COVID-19 case counts associated with food price spikes

The cost of food increased during the pandemic, especially in countries with high COVID-19 caseloads, according to international researchers. The team investigated trends in retail prices of various food groups across up to 181 countries, and found a significant rise in average prices, especially for more nutritious foods. They say the biggest drivers of food price spikes appear to be dramatic changes in what people ate as they locked down, and disruptions to supply chains once food leaves the farm.
