Cask wine, or 'goon', has been decreasing in popularity as a drink of choice for Aussies, but is still popular among our heaviest drinkers, according to Australian research. Researchers combined data from two surveys of Aussies aged 16 and over about their drinking habits over the past decade, and found goon is almost entirely drunk at home and disproportionately by big drinkers. They say goon is the cheapest alcohol you can buy in Australia at an average of 54 cents per standard drink - so the impact on cask wine drinking should be considered when discussing putting a minimum unit price on alcohol.
