Getting COVID-19 patients to hold their breath could help find those most at risk

Getting hospitalised COVID patients to hold their breath could help predict who is likely to suffer the most severe consequences of infection, according to Australian and international research. The researchers looked at how long people could hold their breath for, and also how much their oxygen levels dropped when they held their breath, with aims to develop with a breath-holding risk prediction score. People with higher breath holding risk scores were almost five times more at risk of poor COVID-19 outcomes. The authors say breath-holding may help identify COVID-19 patients at risk of future respiratory failure.
