Gastric bypass might be better for your heart than losing weight by dieting

International researchers say a type of gastric bypass surgery known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass can cause meaningful reductions in the blood fat levels of severely obese people, which they say is noteworthy because the same was not seen in patients who lost similar levels of weight by dieting. The researchers measured the blood fat levels of 78 people, half of whom had the bypass surgery, and say that surgery-specific changes to blood fat levels appear to be independent of weight loss, and might be evidence that gastric bypass should be considered to protect the hearts of severely obese people.
