Researchers in the US say extreme heat is linked with higher numbers of socioeconomically disadvantaged older people needing to head to the ED. The researchers looked into data on over 34,500 people aged 65 or older who were admitted to an urban health care system in the US, and say when the mercury soared, so did the number of people entering the ED for any cause. They compared these numbers to an ED that had primarily White, privately insured patients, and say the link wasn't present. The team suggests tailoring heat warning strategies for our vulnerable and minority populations.

Extreme Urban Heat and Emergency Department Visits in Older Adults

About The Study: The findings of this study suggest that significant heat-health risks were observed in an emergency department serving socioeconomically vulnerable populations, suggesting tailored heat warning strategies should be studied further.
