The combined impacts of extreme heat and bushfire smoke exposure increase the risk of kids being hospitalised by more than either of these factors alone, according to Australian and international research. The study, which looked at hospitalisations in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile and Thailand from 2000 to 2019, found that the risks of hospitalisation from the combination of extreme heat and bushfire smoke exposure were higher overall, with strong effects on respiratory illness, renal illness and diabetes. The risk was highest among children under 10 years, suggesting that early childhood and early school age may be a period of susceptibility, the authors say.
