A number of options for supplemental screening are available for women with dense breasts, including 3D mammography, ultrasound, and MRI. At the moment, BreastScreen WA recommends that if women have other breast cancer risk factors in addition to high density, that they might benefit from having an ultrasound in addition to their mammogram. However, there is currently a lot of confusion about what women with dense breasts should do, and Australia urgently needs national clinical guidelines for how to manage breast cancer screening in women with dense breasts.
