US scientists looked at the records of 43,465 children under the age of 18 with COVID-19 to see whether having existing illnesses makes kids more vulnerable to severe COVID-19. More than a quarter of the kids had one or more existing illnesses, and those with the severe form of COVID-19 were most likely to have type 1 diabetes, obesity, and/or heart and blood circulation problems. Children with these underlying conditions should be closely monitored if they catch COVID-19, the scientists say.
