Public health researchers are proposing a revised version of New Zealand’s now established Covid-19 alert levels, which they say no longer reflect the current scientific understanding of the pandemic and haven’t worked well for Māori. Lockdown measures are now reflected in the proposed Alert Levels 5 and 6, while their revised Levels 3 and 4 are meant to limit local and regional spread of the virus. The study team says the past year has amply demonstrated the value of Indigenous models of health for responding to public health emergencies, and their new version aims to promote equity and uphold Te Tiriti.
