A new study explores pre-colonial Māori gender diversity and fluidity. Drawing on historical records, pūrākau, and previous research, the paper describes evidence of pre-colonial gender diversity and considers how colonisation changed cultural views on gender. The author emphasises that embracing gender diversity is important in reaffirming Māori culture over colonial ideologies.
