In April, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced there had been a case of the highly pathogenic bird flu, H5N1, in a dairy farm worker in the US and now scientists have published details about the case. The researchers found that segments of the virus's genes were closely related to viruses detected in Texas dairy cattle and other viruses detected in birds in Texas during March 2024. The virus genome lacked changes that would affect its transmission risk in humans although it did have one change that has been linked to the ability of the virus to infect mammals.
